Large Scale Interoperability Solutions in InterConnect Using SAREF4ENER: Experiences and Lessons Learned

The fragmentation of platforms, protocols, and standards in the Internet of Things (IoT) domains of smart home, buildings and grids poses many challenges to the realization of an ‘interconnected world’. Making devices from different producers interoperable interests both industrial entities and end-users. On the one hand, industrial manufacturers have started to understand the importance of connecting physical devices within and across domains using open standards (such as SAREF) in order to avoid vendor lock-in. On the other hand, consumers purchasing (often expensive) appliances from different vendors expect to be able to easily integrate their devices with each other to improve comfort, increase energy efficiency and reduce costs. This presentation builds on a series of industry presentations at previous SEMANTICs editions on this topic (https://2022-eu.semantics.cc/semantic-technologies-address-interoperabil...) to show the latest progresses on interoperability using SAREF and SAREF4ENER. These last achievements have been obtained in the context of the H2020 InterConnect project (https://interconnectproject.eu/) in collaboration with industry manufacturers like Bosch, Siemens and Miele. The InterConnect project, which gathers 50 partners, develops and demonstrates, in 7 large scale European pilots, advanced solutions for connecting and converging digital homes and buildings with the electricity sector. This presentation will discuss the challenges and lessons learned in bringing the industry to understand and use, on a large scale, semantic solutions based on the ETSI SAREF suite of ontologies (https://saref.etsi.org/). During the presentation, the technical solution delivered by the interconnect project in the Dutch pilot will be explained with the support of an audiovisual demonstration. The demonstration is based on a decentralized and distributed InterConnect semantic interoperability layer that connects smart devices from different vendors (e.g., Bosch and Miele) with an Energy Manager based on the TNO Reflex platform.
